Keeping Existing Readers, Wiring, and Cards When Switching Access Systems

Upgrading Out-of-Support Systems

If you manage a building, marina, or office with an existing Wiegand or HID-style access system that is out of support, you can keep your existing readers, wiring, and cards when switching systems.

The idea is to keep the readers and cable, swap the controller, then move to mobile and wallet credentials door by door.

The Retrofit Hub (UA-Retrofit-Hub-2) controls two doors and works with third-party Wiegand readers or with the UniFi Retrofit Reader and Retrofit Reader Fingerprint.

To avoid running new cable, a PoE Over 2-Wire Retrofit Extender reuses existing two-wire runs.

Real-World Retrofits

An installer replacing a legacy system said the retrofit hubs avoid rewiring 2-wire runs and can reuse some Wiegand readers.

A marina kept its existing weatherproof Wiegand readers, and exported and imported its existing cards and users.

One installer with eight locations of mixed door types said the system works well, and managers can add fobs so one fob opens every property.

System Limitations and Fire Safety

Only select Wiegand readers work through the Retrofit Hub.

UniFi Access does not replace the PMS-integrated guest-room locks used by hotels.

No UL 294 listing was found, and some commercial projects require one.

Fire alarm release is mandatory and is the installer's job.

The eight-door hub has a fire-alarm input, and single-door hubs need extra wiring.
