Installing IP Cameras Over Existing Coax and Two-Wire Cable
Upgrade Analog Cameras Without Rewiring
You can install modern IP cameras without running new cable through your walls and ceilings.
Existing coax or two-wire cable from an analog camera system can carry an IP camera or a network jack when adapters are fitted at each end.
Old coax carries a different signal from network cable, so a camera cannot simply be plugged into it without adapters.
Older network cabling of Cat5e grade or higher can usually be kept as it is.
Camera Operation and Recording
Each UniFi camera uses a single cable that carries both power and video.
The cameras record to a recorder in the building, with no per-camera licence.
Where a cable cannot be used at all, Wi-Fi cameras such as the G6 Instant join the same recorder, running on USB-C power.
Door Access and Network Jacks
The same approach works in other settings.
The Access Gate Hub runs over existing two-wire cable using PoE extension, and a PoE Over 2-Wire Retrofit Extender exists for door access.
Hotels and inns can use existing coax or phone wire to give rooms a network jack.
