UniFi Protect Compared With Rhombus Cloud Cameras on License Cost

Comparing Camera License Requirements

Rhombus requires an ongoing license to operate any of its cameras. The Rhombus Professional license costs $149 per camera for one year, while the multisensor Enterprise license costs $649. UniFi Protect carries no per-camera license fees at any camera count.

Calculating Five-Year Software Costs

For an eight-camera boutique on the Rhombus Professional tier, a business pays $1,192 per year in licenses alone, excluding hardware. A deployment of 16 cameras on Rhombus Professional costs $11,920 in licensing over five years. With UniFi, the five-year license cost for those same 16 cameras is $0.

For a single shop door, a consumer camera is genuinely cheaper over a few years than a professionally installed system. The financial case for UniFi grows with your camera count and years of use.

Hardware Pricing and AI Features

Rhombus hardware is priced at $399 for the R120 2MP dome, $599 for the R200 5MP dome, and $1,499 for the R410 8MP dome. By comparison, a UniFi G6 Turret costs about $199.

The Rhombus Professional license does not include AI features or cloud archiving. UniFi's AI detections run directly on the camera hardware, and the manufacturer states there are no paid AI add-ons.

Storage and Maintenance Limitations

UniFi recordings are local by default, whereas Rhombus offers a cloud archive as a paid add-on at higher tiers. Small UniFi consoles run out of storage and processing quickly, meaning multi-site estates need deliberate planning and a dedicated recorder per site.

Rhombus notes in its blog that self-hosting makes the system owner responsible for patching and uptime. That is a fair point: with a UniFi deployment, your business or your IT provider owns the updates.
