What is Microsoft Intune?

The service that controls the computers and phones holding company data — wiping a lost laptop, requiring a PIN, pushing software out.

The license that grants it

a seat, a month

Who already has it

Business Premium, F1 and F3 include it, so a company already on one of those has it. On every other plan it is bought on its own.

Wiping a lost laptop is the step everybody asks about, and it is only available because of the first one. A device that was never enrolled cannot be reached at all.

  • Wipe a lost or stolen laptop without touching the person’s own phone.

  • Require a PIN, or enforce disk encryption, before a device is allowed at company data.

  • Push an application out to every machine at once.

Where it stops

A device enrolled on a device-only license cannot use app protection policies or Conditional Access. Those follow the person, so they need a user license.

Worth knowing

  • An administrator does not consume a license to manage Intune.

  • A license is needed for any user or device that benefits from the service, including through an API.

  • Plan 2 and the Suite sit above Plan 1 and are additive to it, never a replacement.

Common questions

Do administrators need a license?

No. Managing Intune consumes nothing. The license is counted against the people and the devices being managed.

Who does need one?

Any user or device that benefits from the service, including through an API. That covers a device enrolled with no person attached to it.

What do Plan 2 and the Suite add?

Plan 2 adds tunnel for mobile app management, specialty and shared device management, and firmware-over-the-air updates. The Suite is Plan 2 plus endpoint privilege management, Cloud PKI, enterprise app management, Remote Help and advanced analytics. Both are additive to Plan 1 rather than a replacement for it, so Plan 2 with Plan 1 is $15 a seat and the Suite with Plan 1 is $23.

Which plans include Intune?

Business Premium, F1 and F3. On Business Basic, Apps for business and Business Standard it is added with Microsoft Intune Plan 1 at $10 a seat.
